Here's what JohnZ says: Tires didn't have any codes, stickers, or labels on them at all - only the inspection markings (colored lines, like pinstripes, on the tread, which pretty much disappeared during the roll-test/toe-in process). Those are tire manufacturer internal ID codes - for their in-process tracking; didn't mean anything to the assembly plant; there were other smaller pad-stamped codes and markings as well on the sidewalls, usually near the bead, that were internal inspection marks too.
