Default Re: What was your first car?

I bought a '59 Rambler wagon ($50) with a Caddy Town'n'Country radio (and those cool Rambler fully reclining seats ) The Rambler didn't have any brakes backing up; I bumped into a couple of things (telephone pole, passing car) along the way. I traded the Rambler for a '63 Mercury Comet with a 260 V8, blew the rear seal on a road trip and ran the engine dry. Light came on, filled it up with oil, drove it home, fixed the seal and ran fine after that. Had an aftermarket AC unit that slowed that car to a crawl..

Sold the Comet, moved from Iowa to Atlanta, and bought my first "real" car, a '66 Chevelle, 283 and 'glide, L-60's in the back along with those twist-in coil spring spacers. Had a friend with a '67 Barracuda, 273 and a 3-spd auto, He would beat me in Low, but I would pass him everytime I shifted into High. My brother sold me the Chevelle for $600, and he made me get my driver's license first. Up until then I had not seen the need for a license!

My boss in Atlanta let me use his car for my driving test, he had a late sixties Jaguar E-type; I drove it for about three miles before taking the test. Had a real "on-off" throttle in that car, and I had a lot of fun on the test!
Wow, that was 32 years ago...
