Many companies made that type of hood scoop. It was referred to as a "Bauman scoop" because of the "Bauman layer" -some physics priciple that helped design it. It was also affectionatly called a Sox & Martin scoop or Mopar scoop because so many Mopar guys ran it. A&A made one as well as Fiberglass Trends as well as many others I'm sure. Probably came out in early '70. Never really seen one before that in any of the publications. Grumpy started to run one on his '70's Camaro. Very popular in the early to mid '70's.

I'm thinking I've seen this hood on one of the Motion race cars as well. I'm guessing this hood was in production for a while?

The one in the second pictire is shaped more like a Bill Jenkins style, Ive seen those called a Grump Lump. But Bill used them with an opening at the base of the windshield, not in front like that one.

68 Top Stocks pic has a "Grump Lump" scoop. Jenkins used it on his first prostock car. Frank

I remember a picture of Grumpy's 68 Camaro with a hand made alum sheet stock scoop pop rivited along the seems. It may have been the prototype of the glass Grump Lump as the shape and size was the same.

The scoop on top of Zl-1 #1 in 68topstocks pic was made by Anderson Industries (AI)in Maryland. They were the only ones making the grump lump scoop with the raised center hump straight down through the middle-similar to what's down the center of a stock 67-69 Camaro hood. It is barely noticable in the pic but it's there. I have seen it in other pics of the same car.
I have an old AI catalog from early '70's and they sold lots of one piece and sectional front ends, hoods and fenders for race cars. Later they got into street rod bodies. AI still sells this grump lump scoop alone or attached to any fiberglass hood they sell. Part # TR-7 for the scoop. IMO, does not look good on a car unless the car hood has the raised hump in the middle i.e. would look out of place on a flat hood Nova. Company is now called Rod & Race fiberglass I believe. Dave |
