The big cars are definately underrated. If I get my car to hook up it runs pretty well. At the local track it has gone 13.65 @ 102 is my best pass ever in it. Its just tuff with a stick car. The red 66 is a pretty neat car, I havent see it in a long time. I also remember a 66 427 wagon with a 4 gear out there too, along with a 409 64 wagon. Micky

I know we've covered this before, but the topic of the "generous" exhaust manifolds of the '65 and '66 BIG cars came up recently on the Pure Stock board, and it got me to checking. What I found (and Rick had probably already told me this!) was that the '65 L-78 big cars shared exhaust manifolds with the '65 Corvettes, whereas the '66 L-72 big cars shared exhaust manifolds with the '66-69 Corvettes!
Here is a picture of a set of '66 L-72 big car &'66-'69 Corvette manifolds. And, here is a picture of what the standard fare 385hp manifolds off a '68 big car. What a DIFFERENCE! As for the L-72, I gotta tell ya, it may be sour grapes since I sold my LS-6 to pick up a Yenko Chevelle, but I like the 427 better for racing. To me, it seems like the perfect blend: the bore of the 454, with the stroke of the 396. |

Rob,
My vote too. I love the LS-6 but inch for inch the 427 will probably remain the all time king.

Elvis was the "king" but the LS6 was the "Bully of the Boulevard".

Here is a hot look'n 67 Biscayne. Not an L72, but still a nice car. I too have been looking for the allusive 67 L72 big car...but none to be found.
I think Casey would like this one. http://www.impalass427.com/72res/67BelAir.jpg |

Thank you, L78Impala, for the kind words about my 67 Bel Air.I have been silently enjoying this site for quite a while. Excellent information and always something new to learn. When I saw you post the picture of my car I figured it was time to join the party. I watched the number of page views on the Casey Marks Biscayne story go past 2700 and wondered if this was turning into the Super SIZE Car registry!
Best regards, Marc |

Our parts man at work used to work at Economy chevrolet in Rock Island Il. A couple of the guys he ran with bought 1966 427 powered big cars. Rosco Davidson had a fully loaded silver Impala with a 4 speed that he ran at Cordova drag strip. "Fat Jack" Reynolds had an aztek bronze Biscayne, rubber floor mat, radio delete, 4 speed with 4.88 gears. Madsen says he took it home and pulled the motor and had it balanced and blue printed. While he was waiting on that installed fiberglass fenders, hood, deck lid and bumpers. Says he never ran it at the strip just on the 1ways in Rock Island. Madsen has a Rock Island Argus paper with an article on the street racing in Rock Island

Along the same line of thought...what exhaust manifolds did the '68 & '69 L-72 big cars get? The same as the Corvettes, or the same crappy ones as the 385hp?
