Default Re: Question on Motion Corvette gas cap

Joe,
The black stripe on Kevins car is factory and was special ordered (2ZQ4AA)$400.00 along with the Can-Am White (2972AA)no-charge, by the original owner, Jack Cheskaty. Wonder if he saw a Motion car and said he wanted it painted like that? This info came from an article in the Nov. 1985 issue of "Vette" magazine. Maybe Kevin can varify this or inform us if new information has come out.

Using this as an opportunity to practice posting pictures. If this works, its the magazine cover with the ZL-1 Corvette.

Now that I have succeeded at that, back to your original question. My Phase III GT has a custom aluminum fuel tank that was installed by a previous owner. The Le Mans cap is secured to the fiberglass deck and has an alum. flange that fits right in the top of the tank(no way for fuel to splash out). Not as it was originally done by Motion, but a very good design. Someday I might restore the car to original, but for now I try to change as little as possible. My thinking is that the previous owners and the modifications they did(especially for racing)are all a part of the history of the car and returning it to the way it left Motion would be denying this history. Now, having said that, I do believe in restoring cars, and most likely will some day.

Joe I'm still in Phoenix at Barrett Jackson auction; just now checking this post using my laptop computer. The original owner of my ZL-1 is still alive. I am in contact with him regularly. He is the Internal Revenue District Director for the five Western states. He bought the car new, and has been a wealth of information for me. The Window sticker mentioned in this Topic by Daryl was a reproduction; made for display purposes by Otis Chandler, when it belonged to him. I asked Jack about the original GM factory window sticker to which he responds he remembers very well the original window sticker, i.e. the Zl-1 motor option as he says quote: " there was no mistaking that as it essentialy doubled the price of the car". When I asked him about the stripes; he responded that they were on the car when he bought it, but they were not listed on the window sticker. I have the above statements on notorized affadavits from him on his IRS letterhead. My assumption is that the stripes were dealer applied. Any way Jack had this ZL-1 for just under two years, raced it most of his ownership. I have original race programs, race photos, and the contract he had with a racer named Woody Walcher and Associates race team. Woody is still alive and confirms the above as well. Jack traded the Zl-1 for another Vette in late 1970 not knowing there were only two ZL-1's made and what significance it was destined to be.

Kevin, Thanks for the updated info on the stripe. I re-read the article carfully and toward the end it says "It should also be noted that this ZL-1 Corvette was factory painted Can-Am White". I take it now, that this means "not white & black". The article is at the time D&A Corvettes restored it.
Also interesting, is that the article is by Martyn Schorr and in it he says he had a ZL-1 Corvette, back in 1969 when he was editor of CARS Magazine, and it wasn't this one or the Yellow one(RogersCorvette).
The DEC. '91 issue of "VETTE" magazine did an article on a Monoco Orange conv.(w/auto.) that the owner claims he bought new as a ZL-1. The owner was John Maher of Leechburg, Pa. and the article was by Jim Campisano. Do you know anything about this car?
Most interesting, is that to buy the ZL=1, he sold an L-88 to no less than his freind, the late DON YENKO.

DarryID - I remember a Marty Schorr article where he mentioned a ZL1 Corvette that I believe he said was black and was on loan to him from Chevy.

You also made me remember an article in a 1968 Corvette News on the Sunray-DX L88 Corvettes the Don raced and he had the Yenko crest emblem on the hood. There were three Sunray-DX red white and blue L88 Corvettes at Sebring 1968. The #2 car driven by Yenko/Rodriguez, #3 car Morgan/Sharp, and #4 car Thompson/DeLorenzo. The #3 car won the GT class with a 6th overall. In the same magazine there is an article showing Yenko testing the #3 car to prepare it for LeMans. I don't know if he ever raced it at LeMans though.
