Many of the magazines that have "Chevy" in the title routinely publish incorrect info. This has been going on so long just about nobody takes them seriously.
In general a COPO can not be identified by VIN or body tag data. Exceptions are ZL1s and Yenko Camaros; all VINs are known for these. (well, PA Yenko Camaros...) A few guidelines: none are known to have been built in CA ("L" VIN), no L72 cars built prior to 01B. So you can rule out CA built cars and any Norwood car built prior to 01B. For the rest the only way to be certain is factory paperwork. Being that is way too easy to create a very convincing fake I wouldn't consider a non-Yenko COPO without it. X11 means it has style trim. X44 means it does not. They are unrelated to what's under the hood.

The obvious things a COPO car has is a big-block x-member,heater box, motor stands, curved necked radiator,zl-2 hood with appropriate wiring,3/8 fuel line, welded plate on rear frame rails for dual exhaust, five leaf rear springs. Even with all these things without documentation the car is considered a clone. Take my word on this.Kurt S may have more info from your trim tag and vin if provided.

How do i determin a ss car. I bought this car with NO eng/trans. 5 miles from my hoe , stored inside . AMAZINGLY for $ 750.00 it came with a NOS Gm cowl hood , Nos GM core support ,a Nos pair of rocker moldings, 2 aftermarket rear 1/4 skins and I believe a aftermarket tail light panel. I have the bare shell on a dolly in the garage and after i added the new panels , along with Rockers , wheel houses and trunk drop offs , i stripped it to bare metal and have it in DP-50 Epoxy. As well as all other panels stripped and DP-50 coated. I stripped the Sub frame last night and have it going to blasted this week. THANKS FOR THE HELP. |
