I bought some goodyear polyglass F 70-14 for my 69 chevelle and the person at Kelsey tires
indicated that any chevelle made before 12/69 the F 70 14 would not be in white letters, only Goodyear polyglass is and that after 12/69 has the tire size in white letters. I would like to know if anybody knows about this . Jeff |

Yeah, when I ordered my Polyglass tires for my LS-6 they asked when it was built, and when I asked "why", they told me about the white letter thing. I told them, but I also told them I didn't really care, as I just needed the tires immediately (it was the week of the Pure Stock Drags!).
But, I still don't know any more about the white letter thing, but I would probably say that Brian does.... |

I think his dates are wrong.12/68 sounds better.
I haven't seen any 1968 Chevelles with white letter tires from the factory.They started putting white letter tires on Chevelles in 1969,so those early built cars might not have gotten them. The 12/69 production date is heavily into the 1970 cars Production time and the Aug-Dec.cars have been documented with white letter tires by then. The Brands available from the factory were: Goodyear,Goodrich,Firestone,General,and Uniroyal.Buildsheets did not specify tire brands. |

The 68/69 Novas did not ever use white letter tires. I think the 70 Novas did not use lettered tires either? {Marlin?} Red stripe/white stripe and I have been told plain black sidewalls only. I do not believe that the 69 cars used the Goodyear Polyglas wording until very late 1969 if at all. Original cars using Goodyears always say Wide Tread F-70-14. Most original tire F-70-14 Camaros I have seen use the Uniyroyal Tiger Paws that are not reproduced. Any other opinions on the Polyglas tires is very welcome...BKH

BKH;
You are correct, Novas were not available with white letter tires, only redwalls (through '69) or whitewalls. Not sure regarding the blackwall, but wouldn't be surprised. This not what most Yenko guys want to hear, but it is what they came with. Check out the original pic of the Forest Green Yenko Nova under the 'Vintage Photos' section of this site. M

I think the debate is getting off of Kelsey Tires' point. They're commenting on two types of white letter tires, Polyglas's with the size also in white letters, and those without. Initially they were done without, and changed to "sized" configuration early in the 1970 Model year. This became a big point to '70 Boss 429 show competitors, as all 499 of these cars were built prior to the end of calendar year '69 and were fitted with no-size F-60-15 Polyglas tires originally. Until recently, there were no reproductions of the "no size" Polyglas tires and original, perfect sets of five were selling for upwards of $5K. (Yikes).
Wide tread GT's were a simpler, cheaper tire with similar lettering to the Polyglas. I just found a couple of used original F70-14 Wide Tread GT's. Thanks bkhpah, now I know what they're for ![]() |
