I was in the Henry Ford Museum the other day and noticed they have a new exhibit focused on bicycles.

They have a Krate bike, a Lemon Peeler, on display.

What tickled me was the choice they made for the companion bike in the display: a Schwinn Continental 10 speed, in Root Beer Barrel brown metallic.

That is the exact bike (even the same color) I bought to replace my Krate bike when I sold it, in high school.

Lemon Peeler value = approx $10,000.

Schwinn Continental value = approx $10

In the early 80's I saved up my summer lawn mowing money to buy a new black and gold Continental at Downers Grove Schwinn. I remember Dad driving me up there and counting out the cash on the counter for the $209.99 + tax price. I still have the bike - my son rode it for a while in his early teen years. Hanging in the basement now.......

Default 1964 Schwinn Stingray.

JMHO,

The most desirable year 1964 Stingray was the first ‘Full’ (12 months) of production by Schwinn on this New bicycle after the hugely successful trial run of 8+ months of the ‘63 Stingray.

Schwinn knew they had a bicycle that every kid wanted so now all hands on deck with models, colors, seats and multiple options for 1964.

Here are two factory Original (paint, decals, seats and dated tires) 1964 Stingrays in the rare color of Opal Violet.
This color was only offered for 12 months (Feb. ‘64 - Feb. ‘65).

The E4 (May ‘64) is a J39 Deluxe with the white “reverse” screened white paint on the chain guard, tufted solo polo seat and square back seat strut.

The K4 (Oct. ‘64) is a J37 Super Deluxe with a chrome chain guard with Opal paint and white screened letters, tufted Stingray saddle, high loop seat strut and the famous 20’’ chrome springer.

These two models also came with different style pedals.
