Default 1966 Buick Sport Wagon

I looked at a cool one-family owned ‘66 Buick 2 seat Custom Sport Wagon this week. Sapphire Blue with blue interior (Custom Sport Wagon came with deluxe steering wheel and nicer door panels and seat upholstery). These came in 3 seat and 2 seat configurations. I have to admit that I didn’t realize that Vista Cruisers and Sport Wagons of this era were quite a bit longer than standard wagons and other A bodies, with 5” of additional wheelbase and 4” longer rear doors. The raised roof and extended wheelbase allowed a unique forward facing rear seat over the axle. Cool old car with no rust since it lived in arid Yakima most of its life. Nicely optioned with the “Wildcat 375” 340 4bbl V8 and Switch Pitch Super Turbine 300. Power steering, brakes and front seat. Car is going to be for sale for $8500, would be nice stock or lowered a bit.

No, I've got enough mid 60s rides in the garage. I was hired to inspect the car and do a market value assessment for them.

It is a cool long roof.

But....JMHO. NOT a sport wagon if it has four doors.

GM really missed the boat here. Could have continued the 64-65 two door Chevelle wagons across the board. They would be hugely popular today. Would be the "Nomad" that was never made in the 60s. Yes, I know Chevy kept the Nomad name... in name only.

Oh, and feel free to use Sport Wagon and Sportwagon interchangeably. You'll note "Sport Wagon" on the quarter panel emblems and "Sportwagon" used in the brochure. Buick couldn't decide either.

I either never knew or else forgot that Olds wasn't the only GM division to use that raised roof....pretty cool. Amazing that the steering wheel isn't cracked!

A good view of what makes a Sport Wagon/Vista Cruiser.
