A block heater would have been unusual in a muscle car back then as most of us took our cars off of the road about November and drove our winter beaters until spring. I've been driving since 1965 and never have had a block heater in any of my cars, but then again I live in Ontario where the winters are not that harsh. They would be more common in Quebec and the western provinces where winters tend to be more severe.

The first time I visited Thunderbay (North shore of Lake Superior) I was amused by an electrical outlet for every hotel parking space. Had occasion to rent a car there once in January, the rental came with an extension cord in the back seat. Actual air temp was -40.

My friends there take it in stride.
