If I understand correctly, factory trunk seals had the white string inside, and so did the over the counter GM parts issued for many years. At some point, the GM part was revised and while still the original style soft latex material, the string was no longer within it.
I recently bought an NOS trunk seal w/o the sting for about $250 while the earlier issue seals with the sting have been known to sell for three times that amount. Both are soft and pliable and both provide an excellent seal.
