There is also a gearbox/solenoid bank which engage the required cable (depending on desired movement). These are very bad for sticking or not engaging due to old dried up grease/lubricant. They often need to be fully dismantled, cleaned and re-lubed to operate correctly.

This is exactly what I had to to do. The grease wasn't grease any more.
