The P-51 Mustang has a very interesting history. Originally built for England it first had an Allison engine. But this was found to be unsuitable because of it's inability to fly above 15,000 feet due to the single stage supercharger. So the Allison was removed and in it's place went the Rolls Royce Merlin with it's two speed, two stage intercooled supercharger, one of the greatest engines ever made. This allowed the P-51 to fly as high as 42,000 feet. Top speed: 440 MPH.
