If it's heavily tarnished,add two tablespoons each of salt and white vinegar to a pint of water in a bowl.
Completely soak the item in the solution overnight.
In the AM you should see a completely different colored part.
Rinse it off with cold water and towel dry,then rub in a protective polishing cream like MAAS to bring out it's luster.
I've done this on many Brass & copper items with incredible results.
Understand that over time brass & copper will tarnish again,so get used to doing this.
