Dave , I'm pretty sure for the 69 NHRA Season , the Shield pictured here was Outlawed and LAKEWOOD had the 1 piece bell with sight hole and Louvered Block saver. A few years after that, around 73-74 ish.,,,the sight hole was outlawed as well....these both had a larger wrap around flange & the holed ones had Square welded on nuts for the block saver. Newer ones had Hex nuts welded on and the even newer ones had just holes with a smaller flange. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Are you sure that is a Lakewood scattershield? I have not seen one like that.

Are you sure someone didn't make that inspection plate? Inspection plate mods were very common on those.

I believe this is what the earlier style looked like:

Jason - did you find a part number on the one shown above?
68Dana - Also, if you are using the scatter shield for its intended purpose (containing a disintegrating clutch), be sure to install the matching block protection plate seen in the background below (goes between scattershield and block).... ![]()

No, I didn't see a part number but also was not looking for one since I did not know they were stamped. Yes, a block plate should definitely be used.

That is definitely how they came with the three straps retaining the inspection cover. I recently looked at a drag car find '62 Corvette with the exact same scattershield and have seen a few others over the years.

I called Ansen a few years back to ask about old stock they might have on their steel parts- like traction bars and such. I posted some pics of the 3 pairs of traction bars they had squired away- which I bought. They didn't have anything else, but I did speak to a fellow who was involved with the steel stuff back then. He told me they were one of the pioneers in hydro-formed bell housings. Claimed it was done in Texas, I think. He also said the tooling was still down there as of 2006 or so. Anyways, he told me the early Lakewood hydro-formed steel scatter shields were done by Ansen. I am kinda cloudy on the details, but I think he was saying the same part was offered by them both.
Anyways, I'm throwing it out there to compare the two in your searches. Probably the shape changed for Lakewood once they sourced their own tooling for a hydro-formed unit. |

Paul- What you are saying makes perfect sense to me. I am in the process of restoring my car and fortunately have the original owner to assist me in the restoration. He told me that when he purchased the car in 1969 from the dealership it came with a Lakewood/ansen scattershield. At the time I thought he was not sure of the make. Based on your commentary it sounds like he was correct in saying it was a Lakewood/ansen scattershield. I am not sure of the date(s) of the units posted, however since it was installed on my car in 69 they might be mid to late 60's vintage. I confirmed with the original owner that the scattershields that were posted (with the removable inspection plate) are the same as what was installed on my car.
Thanks for the information..... -Dave

With the early Lakewoods you could have purchased a block plate that only extended a little past the bottom of the pan rail. It wasn't a full circle like the one pictured above that bolted to the can at the bottom. I always hated how NHRA changed the rules and wanted me buy to a new scattershield that didn't have the bottom opening. That was about the same time I switched to a glide, and those rules were just one more reason that I did. As I recall the first Lakewood part number with the bottom hole was 15000, and it still had holes in the bellhousing where you could bolt brackets for 55-56-57 type mounts.
