I agree Mark! It's a shame that Pontiac decided to just use white/blue or blue/white (American racing colors) through the 1969-1972 years. I've never been a fan of the "one paint scheme" (or perhaps two) motif, I prefer cars with some variety. The problem is with the one (or two) paint schemes on some of the supercars is that once you've seen one, you've seen them all.
Pontiac wanted to give a 1972 Trans Am to the president of the SCCA, and since the Pontiac Trans Am was named after the SCCA Trans Am Series, it seemed like a great promotional tool. But the SCCA president declined because the Trans Am was only available in white or blue, and he only drove red cars. Pontiac then made a one-off red Trans Am, and the rest is history.
