A site we used to have, we'd (a super mod/admi) have to approve each new member (It very well might be that way here, it was so long ago I joined) This deters the automated, and some of the live also. Approving each members a pain, but you can almost tell the spammers by their user names (see above), and a IP check can come back to past banned user spammers (not definitive, but helps) We'd also encourage members NOT to reply to the spam threads as that's just what they want (registering hits on the topic drives the subject matter higher in spider searches)

If you're approving it's a safe bet (here) the person that registers as ZL1427 is legit vers a weird username (like mine even) like those above (common sense I know)......
