My engine builder used do head work for Joel back in the 60's and said a lot of their cars started out as six cylinder cars.

Not sure where you got that info from, but all Baldwin-Motion customer 427 Camaros started out as 396/375 cars. There was an active secondary market for the 396/375 takeout engines, no market for Sixes.

----Yup, Marty,,,and also the rest of the drivetrain was up to the task (rear, springs, trans, etc., etc.). It would have been an expensive deal to pull a 6-cyl car up to 427 standards!!!.....Bill S
