Which way do the #'s face on fan belts?

Belt on my 1100 mile 70 Z28 you can read looking down at the engine.

I don't know how you do that Charley [img]<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/hmmm.gif[/img] . I have tried and tried on my Chevelle but the belt is just spinning too fast.
