The more hi-performance the engine, especially big blocks, the larger the acceptable spread. This is due to the low volume and the fact that inventory was not on a first in, first out basis. The difference in the head dates could explain the whole date spread. If there was a problem with one head, the engine could have been serviced and may have sat for months before being addressed. I had a ’68 435 engine that had a casting date of November ’67 and a build date of July ’68, a full eight month spread.
