The originals have plugs on the ends and the later replacements do not.

Early '842 heads had plugs on each end. About mid-production 1969 went to one plug in one end only.
All '842 heads were closed chamber although I've seen several sets with opened-up combustion chambers. I've always been told these was done later on by owners to improve performance. Nuch
