Looks like you needed the old-style sending unit. Hopefully you didn't burn out the tach hooking it up directly. Some of those old units don't take kindly to direct wiring.

No, I don't think that tach requires a sending unit. I think the model number is 980AA? There is a thread about it here somewhere.

I have instructions at home. Assuming I can find them I will try to scan them and post them for you this evening

Does anyone have a working SW 970 tach in their car? I've seen plenty of these tachs installed in Yenkos, but never saw one that actually functioned properly.

Not talking about solid state rewires or anything here either...a legit vintage tach and 990B box that really works? Are there really any out there?

I have tested and sold quite a few of them.

I found the instructions but the scanner does not work. I can fax the instructions to you if you want to PM me with a number. The instructions are for a model 960-AA, which does not require a box

In addition to an original working 970 tach with a 990B box in a '69 Yenko Camaro I sold earlier this year, I currently have an original 970 in my '67 Z/28 (which is equipped with K66 ignition) utilizing a 990A box. The tach works perfectly.
