So if I am reading this correctly, someone will be able to give the VIN number of their classic car and at least get a report as to which states it has at one time been titled in.

You may not get a previous owners name, but it may open up a few dead ends.

Maybe now or perhaps soon I can help my mother in law find my late father in laws stolen 1963 Corvette. It was stolen 35 years ago from the Lockhead parking lot in Mountain View, Ca.

The National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) is a system that allows an electronic means to verify and exchange titling, brand, and odometer data among motor vehicle administrators, law enforcement officials, prospective purchasers, and insurance carriers. Auto Data Direct, Inc. (ADD) contracts with the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) to provide multi-state vehicle data using NMVTIS.

NMVTIS data allows state titling agencies to verify the validity of ownership documents before they issue new titles. NMVTIS also keeps a history of all "brands" ever applied by any state to the vehicle. "Brands" define the status of a vehicle such as "theft", "flood", "salvage", "rebuilt", "kit", etc. and are not lost when the vehicle travels from state to state.

NMVTIS is operated by AAMVA under the auspices of the Department of Justice. Over half of the states currently provide motor vehicle data to this database. By accessing NMVTIS, ADD customers have valuable information available to them.

ADD provides customers access to:

Current state of title
Title issue date
Odometer reading
Previous state of title
Current brand(s)
Previous brand(s)
Date the brands were applied (In the states participating in NMVTIS)

I just tried it out and ran it for a new X66 project I just titled last week and it pulled it up - this is the report I got:

The National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) is a federal system that contains information on certain automobiles titled in the U.S. NMVTIS is meant to serve as a reliable source of automobile information for all consumers, in an effort to prevent fraud and theft.
All states, insurance companies, and junk and salvage yards are required regularly to report information to NMVTIS. However, NMVTIS does not contain information on all motor vehicles in the United States because some states are not yet providing their vehicle data to the system. Currently, the data provided to NMVTIS by states is provided in a variety of time frames; while some report and update NMVTIS data in "real-time" (as title transactions occur), others send updates less frequently, such as once every 24 hours or within a period of days. NMVTIS is intended to serve as a reliable source of title and brand history for automobiles, but it does not contain detailed information regarding a vehicle's repair history. Before making a decision to purchase a vehicle, consumers may wish to obtain an independent vehicle inspection and consult other available information resources that purchase additional data such as repair histories.
The information in NMVTIS INCLUDES:
Information from participating state motor vehicle titling agencies.
Information on automobiles, buses, trucks, motorcycles, recreational vehicles, motor homes, and tractors. NMVTIS may not currently include commercial vehicles if those vehicles are not included in a state's primary database for title records (in some states, those vehicles are managed by a separate state agency), although these records may be added at a later time.
Information on "brands" applied to vehicles provided by participating state motor vehicle titling agencies. Brand types and definitions vary by state, but may provide useful information about the condition or prior use of the vehicle.

Information from insurance companies, and auto recyclers, including junk and salvage yards, that is required by law to be reported to the system, beginning March 31, 2009. This information will include if the vehicle was determined to be a "total loss" by an insurance carrier.
Information on previous, significant vehicle damage may not be included in the system if the vehicle was never determined by an insurance company (or other appropriate entity) to be a "total loss" or branded by a state titling agency. Conversely, an insurance carrier may be required to report a "total loss" even if the vehicle's titling-state has not determined the vehicle to be "salvage" or "junk."
Consumers are advised to visit www.NMVTIS.gov for more information on how to interpret the information in the system and understand the meaning of various labels applied to vehicles by the participating state motor vehicle titling agencies.
