Yes you are right..I had a few that were turning to powder..for the most part the ones I have you can ball up.

Window ac foam from ant hardware store works just fin. You have to cut it round but it's a good color match and breaths just fine. You also don't have to worry about it turning to dust right out of the package like 40 year old NOS elements. But change it frequently if you drive the car. Heat degrades it rather quickly (hey, it ain't a K & N)
