We used to do the same thing with another family who had kids the same age as mine. Then for a few years we actually dug up 4' to 5' White Pine trees, brought them home as root ball bundles, and kept them in the house for a week. Usually a day or two after Christmas we would take them to the unheated garage for a two or three day acclimation, then replant them in the yard. We had better than 75% survival rate and still have four of them in the yard. Storms and disease got to some of them but one is now over 30 feet tall.
