Default Re: Original paint cars

Someone has suggested that clear coating an original paint car is a good way to preserve the original finish but to renew the shine to the paint? Is this a good idea, or does it ruin the originality of the paint? Does a paint gauge read the thickness of the clear as a a layer of paint? Is the clear removable by any method at a later date once is has been applied?
