Highway 40 near Auburn, east of Sacramento c48:
 Highway 40 at Gold Run, halfway to Reno, c48. You can see where the hillside in the distance was washed away by hydraulic mining in the Gold Rush era. They built the road along the base of the hill. Still looks like that except freeway now:  Climbing up toward the Donner Summit (behind the photographer) from Sacramento on Highway 40, early 50s:
