Default Connecticut title search

I bought my 1969 Corvette in Connecticut back in May of 2006. This past June I decided to try and track down some of it's past owners and started by doing a title search in Connecticut since that's where I bought the car.
After waiting a few months I got a notice from Connecticut DMV stating that they had no record of ownership for my car.
I am a bit confused; I bought the car in West New Haven, CT. and the car had plates on it when I bought it so it definately was registered in CT at least once.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to my next step? Could I have filled out the Copy Records Request incorrectly? Their response gives me the impression that they go by the VIN and that is the correct number so I am stumped.

Any help / ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Dave
