[/ QUOTE ] There should probably be a distinction made between raising the price on a car because its worth more than you're asking, and raising the price because you think someone can afford to spend more. Sounds like the seller in this case did the latter, which I don' think is cool  It's great that you were able to develop a friendship with him, but I'm in agreement with the others who think he was out of line for jacking the price for his given reason.
