Thanks Guys. An experienced welder friend advised I should try a smaller electrode (1/16") to get better control of the arc which would allow a smaller weld and better heat control. With the 3/32"electrode I was finding I needed about 27 amps floored to get started then even backing all the way off on the pedal was still getting too hot and burning in after about 1/2" to 3/4" travel. So I had to do it in stitches.
It was a fun break from color sanding on the L78 car. Gary
