There were no 1971 hemi-equipped Challenger ragtops built by Dodge. The 426 Hemi was only available in the 1970 Challenger R/T ragtop. The reason was that there was no Challenger R/T convertible option available in 1971. You could get a big block in a base Challenger ragtop (the 383/300 horsepower engine) but you could not get an R/T ragtop, therefore no 426 Hemi in a 1971 ragtop Challenger. So, the 9 number was the total 1970 models for US production and 3 more for export.
So your buddy's car must be a 1970 if it is a real car. Got any photos? </div></div> Thanks for the info! I haven't seen the car in a few years, I didn't remember if it was a 1970 or 71, so I guess you answered that for me I took a bunch of pictures at the time, I'll see if I can find them and upload them in the next few days! He actually had a pair, a hardtop and vert, both real '70 Hemi Challengers. I don't know him well but we talked at the show for awhile as it was a very small, local show and my dad and I had never seen the cars before. He was extremely nice and said he doesn't take the cars out much. The convertible was originally sublime but he repainted it long ago in plum crazy to match his hardtop. So do we know how many of the 1970 Hemi Challenger convertibles are accounted for?
