That has happened to me before..and many others. Sometimes depending on traffic there is a lag between the time you bid and it actually officially gets "recorded" electronically by Ebay even though it says your bid got logged in at 20 seconds to go.

On the Ebay Community chat boards there are threads about these lag bids. can't remember the exact reason but in a nutshell, Ebay did not want the Wall Street closing bell affect..that is sometimes 10-15 minutes after the closing bell the market continues to go up or down due to the rush of people buying or selling at 3:59 and the system finally catching up to their orders.

I make sure I click my final bid around the 40-45 second mark.
