Joe, We're ALL nuts sometimes when we find something we need and it's just the "right" thing for the car. Two nights ago I bid (ebay) more than I thought parts were worth (on a normal day) for some things I really need for my blue car. Wouldn't you know it.....someone bid more! I thought my bid was over the top, but I still lost the items. In hindsight, I should have bid a LOT more so my search would be over; one less thing(s) I need to make it right. But I was trying to be realistic. I know now that the term "realistic" has no meaning on ebay.

Ebay is a sellers market.

Something is worth what YOU are willing to pay for it... Every time something sells for more than someone else would pay, people pile on to say it was too much, but the fact is, if you wanted it, paid the price, and got it, that's all that really matters.

That is my eBay point of view exactly. If you want it, need it, have the cash, don't mind spending the cash to get the item and are happy with the item when you receive it then don't look back.

Pics of my car are in my "Introduction" post, for those that asked.

Oh and I forgot, when I was tallying up my receipts I didnt include the paint job which was $6500.00. I never minded paying what I had to for the parts because I always shopped around, paid cash as I went along and did all the grunt work myself, everything except the engine and paint, so I feel like I must haved saved enough to get an item like this to make it closer to right. First reaction was the guilts, which prompted the post, heck I still have 2 kids in college. Thats another reason why my car took so long to build. 5 educations, a wedding, (so far) in addition to everything else...

E bay is like anything else- you just have to watch that you dont get taken, like for instance those interior screw sets which at first may seem like a decent deal, but a look in Year One or NPD (ok, well maybe not Year One) and more than likely you can get it cheaper. Just have to compare and not let impluse let you bid things up. And thats another thing I see greenhorns doing on E bay, and thats to bid at all- if you want an item, just wait till the last second and bid what your willing to pay- and thats it- like I did with the air cleaner- and most other things I buy on E bay- if you lose you lose - and you wont if you put a bid in that you know you will get it- most times, anyway..

some clamped from behind like the ebay link, some had a flat snap ring to hold in the mesh and some have a special zig/zag wire thats holds in the mesh, in all the debate over these I have never seen a proven time line for the changes, my best guess is there was two suppliers of these to the market the clamp style they have there own look to them and I think they dont have a breather tube, "Vern is yours Tube delete"? and the style with the snap-ring or wire holders they appear to be the same unit just a change in holding down the mesh and they have a breather tube.

who knows??? bottom line there hard to find these days as most went in the trash after a backfire and it puked molten goo down a guys carb.

Bud, I'm sure the one I had was a Stelling & Hellings model. It had no tube on the base and the base was not chrome It was a dull spun finish. The domed screen was also not chrome but just a shinny piece of plated steel (it never rusted). Only the band was chrome. Maybe the screw and nut were also chrome, I forget. I sold mine to a dealer at Carlisle many years ago for $45. That was probably about twice what I paid for it.....

The early ones didn't have a breather tube to re-digest engine fumes...The breather tube holes started to appear some with tubes or slug knock outs when the air pollution laws started to be enforced at inspection stations...so the manufacturers complied with the law......
