Bruce,if you see this guy again let him know this car is no longer "The Benchmark" of Ls6 chevelles, and that if he is the one that applied the stripes he is a total D-bag!

Maybe I'm incorrect about the "D-88" thing... I'm not a "numbers" guy... And yes, the owner in question is Dean. (He is not a personal friend, but an acquaintance - and I don't want to get him involved by proxy.)

The entire reason for my "piping up" about this particular car is the fact that it is now RUINED. Stripes or no stripes the fact remains that the car was sans stripes in '02.... At or around the time it was folded/spindled/mutilated/probed/inspected and then deemed "The Benchmark" because of it's originality.

Now it has stripes. A major alteration to it's initial assessment of originality. The current owner(s) are still using (and marketing) the car as the "benchmark" when this keystone of reference has been irreparably altered.

I know two of the previous owners of this car; Dean Ribich and Chad Blomberg, and am proud to call them friends. They both respected the car for what it was and gave it all the best treatment it deserved. Whoever now owns the car, and did this to it should be publically reprimanded and humiliated. Obviously not a true car person; most likely an ego freak more interested in themselves and money than the hobby. If I have offended that person, or anyone who upholds this travesty............. Mission Accomplished!

Agreed, and let the search for a NEW quote/unquote "Benchmark" begin... as the current one has fallen from grace.

One of my goals was to bring the Benchmark car to VetteFest and have it part of the display. I only found out about the stripes about a week ago. Maybe the new owner will remove them. Hopefully someone identifies the new buyer.

It was a beautiful car and one I spent a lot of time with over a couple year period and had been the main car that I have used over the years for the starting point of doing correct restorations.

Chad and I actually drove the wheels off this car one day.........

I'd like to have it and get it restored , but the 68.5k I'd pay won't get it bought. I'll just have to keep looking!

Bruce,
Thank you for all the effort put into the picture taking. Since I am not there this is certainly the next best thing!

That '71 Corvette coupe with the Duntov plate is a LS6 ZR-2 car! It's lot 1290, if you could get some close up pictures of the engine I sure would appreciate it. I saw this car back in 1989 at a NCRS Corvette regional meet.

These cars are so unassuming. Sort of like the ZL-1 Camaros! All the good stuff is hidden in the engine, transmission, chassis! I now have 6 of the 12 of these on our 1971 LS6 survey/registry. It was consigned at B-J's building for 475K for awhile.

With all due respect Howard, that car should NEVER be restored. Worst case, the hood, deck lid and rear panel should be repainted in DuPont 99L and the rest of the car should be left as is. This car can still be a rolling encyclopedia for restorers for years to come,.................... in the right hands.
