| "136" v. "138" Chevelle Vin #

I have a buddy with a 1969 Chevelle with a "136" vin number. He does not know if it was originally a super sport, either do I. Up until this morning, I thought all Chevelles with a "136" vin were Malibus and all Chevelles with a "138" vin were super sports. I have applied this "thought" to many chevelles over the years and now I fear I'm totally wrong. If you remember back a couple years ago when I found the '70 Chevelle super sport build sheet in the back of the Camaro... Well, I was looking at that build sheet today and this '70 Chevelle L-34, M-21 super sport has a vin of "136." Can some Chevelle expert lend a helping hand. Thanks! -Dan

That applies up to the model year 1968 Dan,when the Super Sport option was a Model. Begining in 1969,the Super Sport became an option, and not designated in the VIN Code, like previous. |

The "138" vin code to denote a SS car is correct through the 1968 models, then in 1969 everything changed. The only way to tell if you have a true Super Sport in 69 and up models is with documentation. hope this helps Jim

[/ QUOTE ] Thank you Rick! In other words, a Super Sport post-1968 could have a "136" or "138" vin. Edit: Thank you Wheelhop... you answered my second question.

Most would have a 136 vin denoting a Malibu with an 8-cyl some might have a 134 vin denoting a 300 Deluxe with an 8-cyl.

			A Chevelle Super Sport,for 1969,will now show "34" or "36" as it's Model series,not "38" anymore. In 1970,just "36" was used. |

If it has original rear quarters there will be no malibu emblem holes. check for patched holes,if there not there its a good start, probably an ss |
