Recently bought this sign and am trying to date it. It is vacuum formed plastic with a masonite back and about 40" in length. The lettering panel is separate and has holes to use to fasten to the body (they aren't "knocked out", so the sign has never been used. Also has three metal brackets on the back presumably for wall hanging. It shows enough yellowing and embrittlement to say "real". Showroom use? Any ideas anyone? Rick?

NICE DAVE!
Those are very hard to find, and in that condition even more so. That sign came out in the Fall of 65 and was intended for use through the '66 model year. It was part of a P&A display that included four of those signs (Cars, Trucks, Parts & Accessories), a clock and two sign boards with changeable inserts. The one in your pic looks nice...usually they're kinda rough, and fragile as an egg shell. These were dated items, and meant to be disposed of once the following model year arrived. Whatever you paid,it wasn't enough. ![]() |

Thanks, Rick. I did get lucky this time. I haven't figured out how the masonite back attaches to the, as you correctly point out, fragile as an eggshell front. You, no doubt, have this or a similarly constructed sign. Were there clips?
Have you seen a period photo of these? Were they meant to be wall mounted? And Z11396: I don't think you'll find a comprehensive book on these type signs. As Rick says, they were throw-aways and there were zillions of styles. Just ask mr70........ Dave |

Thanks for the photos, Rick. That appears to be a "tube" rack that the signs and clock mount to - it makes perfect sense for the clips on the back of my sign.
