Oil pump part number 3880378 was a part used in the L88 427 big block Chevy engines from the factory. While specific detailed specs for the original 3880378 pump can be difficult to pinpoint, here's what is known about its application in the L88:
Engine Application: This oil pump was used in the high-performance Chevrolet L88 427 cubic inch V8 engines produced from 1967-1969. These engines were known for their race-ready components and impressive horsepower (though underrated from the factory).
High-Performance Context: Given the L88's racing pedigree and high-revving nature, it's reasonable to assume the factory oil pump, including the 3880378, was designed to provide adequate oil volume and pressure for these demanding applications.
Potential for rebuild: An existing NOS GM 3879633 L88 oil pan and pump kit included a used 3964255 oil pump which would need to be rebuilt before use. This suggests that even factory L88 oil pumps may require refurbishment or replacement for optimal performance, especially after prolonged use.
Replacements and upgrades
Since the 3880378 is a factory part from a specific era, you'll likely find aftermarket replacement or upgraded oil pumps if you're working on an L88 or similar big block Chevy engine:
High-Volume and High-Pressure Options: Reputable manufacturers like Melling offer high-volume oil pumps for big block Chevy applications that provide increased oil delivery over stock. Some also feature stiffer springs for higher pressure settings. These options are beneficial for performance builds or engines with larger bearing clearances, according to Speedway Motors.
Billet Aluminum Pumps: Some high-performance oil pumps, like those from Titan Speed Engineering, feature billet aluminum construction, offering improved durability and anti-cavitation features, according to Titan Speed Engineering.
Integrated Pickups: Many aftermarket pumps come with integrated pickup screens, simplifying installation and ensuring proper oil flow.
In conclusion, while precise specs for the 3880378 oil pump are scarce, it was a high-performance component in the L88 engine. When replacing or upgrading, considering high-volume and/or high-pressure options with billet construction and integrated pickup screens can provide significant benefits for big block Chevy engines, particularly those used in demanding applications. Always evaluate your engine's needs and consult with experienced engine builders when making such selections.

Hope this helps. RALLY.
