it was called the "sport" package, avail on any 71 or 72 Lemans

I worked at Pontiac from 71 - 74 and the "last" of the 72 model production run was mostly "Sport" versions, I recall seeing SEVERAL 100% loaded convertibles going to a Las Vegas dealer, the window sticker was twice the base msrp ... and they weren't even GTO's ... common mistake by people over the years, any 71-72 LeMans with the Sport option was automatically considered a GTO because it looked like one ...

The option was called T41, which attached the Endura "GTO" front bumper to any 1971/1972 Lemans or Lemans wagon. When an owner plopped some GTO stickers on the fenders and a GTO emblem in the grille, well, it leads to all sorts of confusion today. As a sidenote, they never made a 71/72 GTO station wagon, or a 72 GTO convertible, but there are lots of T41-nosed Lemans's running around with GTO stickers.
