Default Is this really a ZL-1?

Going through some old magazines I found this article in a Super Chevy from Dec.'76 issue.

It is an article about Paul Bergert and his '69 Camaro. They say in the article that it is a ZL-1 and he bought it new for $7800. Except that statement there isn't anything on the car that says that. It has a 302 in it, the brakes are non-power. Those are things that he might have changed to classify it differently in dragracing.

Just wanted to post it and see if somebody knew about this car and if it is real.

My guess would be the car is in fact a "real deal" ZL1. Back in 1976 I don't think cloning these cars was nowhere near as common as it is today, nor did it even probably exist. That is due in part to the popularity and rediculous prices of these cars today.

I think people forget that guys bought these cars back in the day to have fun with whether it was drag racing at the strip or street racing the car.. Many people either didn't care about future values of these cars or they just didn't think they would be worth what they are today..

Cool article and car!!

Am I missing something here?
A ZL-1 without the ZL-1.

It was probably pulled out and replaced with the small block for some reason. I'll bet the power brake booster also vanished for less weight while racing.... Unless the article is wrong and calling it a ZL1 when in fact it is a small block camaro... But then the price does not reflect that. I don't think a small black camaro would have cost that kind of money in 69.

The mods on this race car are in line with the mods done to ZL-1 #65 N643779, Fathom green 4-speed. Sold new at Lavery Chev Alliance, Ohio.

Still around, still in racing trim. One of few ZL-1s with #9737.

Someone bought a ZL-1 Camaro new and raced it? What was he thinking?
