Any tips on how to replace cam? I did buy the lock plate retainer tool.

remove the wheel, remove the metal cap, use the tool to relieve pressure on the retainer clip, and remove it. the cam is held with a couple of screws. grease everything well with lithium grease, and reverse order.
I put everything on a screwdriver blade in the order of removal, so I can remember what order to put everything back. |

Maybe I'm being dumb today, but I don't see or recognize the snap ring. Help

I can't tell from the picture, but you have to push the *hub* type deal down to see the snap ring...we have a large "U" shaped tool that goes over the top of the shaft itself and pushes down on the outer edges of the hub thingy as you tighten it...you won't be able to push it down by hand, so you're gonna have to figure something out. I've seen Mo pin a big screwdriver against his chest to hold the hub down long enough to get the snap ring out, but he's 6'5 & 300...so I use a tool. Pop into a local parts store and look at a Hayes manual for any 60s/70s/80s Chevrolet...they're all about the same.

Your picture shows the top plate and snap ring already off. The top plate is what seats the upper bearing. I think there are 3 screws that hold the switch in at this point, you have to cycle the switch to get to all the screws. Unplug the flat plug on the wiring harness at the bottom of the steering column and give a yank, but first hook a wire or string to the wires to use when you install the new switch and want to feed the wires back down.
Good luck. Mike |
