![]() ![]() Even though I'm a Pontiac guy, I remember how badly I wanted a Z back in '74. I drove down to the Chevy dealer in my '68 GTO and tried to order one. I was told they didn't make 'em in '74... or '75... or '76. ![]() Anyway, it seems I musta missed one they made, because it's on eBay! Darn! ![]() ![]() OK, you Heavy Chebbys... tell us Pontiak-kers if there was a'74 Z/28... or not! ![]() eBay '74 Z Thanks! Mac ![]() ![]()

I remember sitting in my high school library on rainy days and reading Hot Rod with my buds. I remember reading the ad for the '77 Z/28 and seeing the asterisk that said: "4-speed transmission not available in California", which was where I lived. That, plus the Z's WEAK horsepower rating was very depressing to us 14-year old car nuts.

Yup, they made them. They're known as the last "real" Z. -or were for a while. Same engine and power rating as '73 (L-82), but was only available in 49 states. CA was stuck with the LM-1 I believe.
One '75 built? -Aahh...the only thing I ever heard of was basically a '74 with all the pollution crap and detuning needed to meet '75 specs built to see what it would do. It wasn't any better then the base engine. That was supposedly one of the reasons it was dropped. '75 was another good one for fake Zs (among all the others). As a kid I would try and pic them out at shows. I still do, but I should mention that my neighbor would put Z emblems on any Camaro even if it was an SS. Why?, "it looks cool" |

This is why I ended-up buying a '75 T/A instead -- which I'm glad I did. It was a great car and very fun to drive. ![]() </font>

I bought a new Z on Jan. 11 of 74. I sold it six months later for a 69 Vette. I still have the window sticker for it though. It was red with a white vinyl top and decals. Similar to the one pictured above. Cream color interior though. LT package 4 speed. Cool car. I saw it in 86. A girl owned it at the time. She had it parked in a Pizza Hut parking lot. I spoke to her briefly and she said it was drinking oil. I just chuckled. It used a qt every 500mi when it was new. The zone rep told me that was normal

Yep, there was most definitely a '74 Z (as stated above). My 1st car was a 74 Camaro...and if it was a real Z, I'd probably still have it. Here's another currently on ebay.
This one also looks a little suspect (missing rear sway bar, wrong stripes etc etc). But, then again I personally think these stripes look nicer than the "mistake" decals that Chevy used in '74 anyways. And, the body tags on the '74 were very similar to the '73's and if it's a Norwood car will denote whether it's a Z on the tag. On a side note, if you're interested in finding a particularily cool '74...look for one that had both the Z-28 package along with the "Type LT" package which deleted the Z stripes and left only the side and rear Z emblems w/ some LT badging on the side of the roof. Stealthier and without the gaudiness of the stripes. -Mark Holman

Actually the Z stripes/decals were an option. Only about half the cars built had them. It was/is a love-hate thing with the stripes or they grew on you. Without the stripes, Z emblems were placed on the body. The LT option added a deluxe interior, some trim details (that could be ordered separately) and more sound deadening material. Here's a pic of a LT Z28 with stripes.
