Default Steel Wheel paint?

I ma ready to repaint my original CF steel wheels for the '67. These wheels were originally black, my question is should they be painted with high gloss paint?

TIA

Do you mean FC wheels? If so, what wheel cover or hubcap will you be using? What month is your car? What color is your car? If you can tell me this info I can steer you in the direction that I have seen on original cars.

Mike,

I DID mean FC wheels .
I have the N96 "mag-style" wheel covers, the car was built in 12D, and the color is emerald turquoise with a white convertible top (K-1).
Thanks!

Sam,

Gotta love those wheel covers!!! Great color combo too! I am putting them on my 67 RS convertible too. It's a power disc brake car, but I am keeping the rallys on both my 67 IPC and my 67 BB Zone car.

I have a Body Broadcast sheet from a 09C R-1 Norwood SS with these covers and they did the face of the wheels in Bolero Red. This is an early car though. To me it seems that GM went to painting the face of all of the wheels with full covers (N96, P01 and P02) gloss black enamel. Of course, the cars with the base hub cap were still painted body color through out the year. So, this one is a bit of a toss up. I am guessing from the fact that you have an FC wheel that your convertible is an SS or has the P12 option.

If it were my car I'd go with the gloss black enamel face and PPG DP90 black epoxy primer before the paint.

How about posting some pics of the car ( I got a look at it on your clubs website)?!?

Hope this helps,

Mike

Mike,
Thanks for the info. Yes it is an RS/SS350, powerglide car. I would post some pics but the car is still mostly apart, I hope to have it done by April.

Sam

glad to see you got the covers.. hope they are nice ones!

As most know, my experience is only with Chevelle, and esp. 66/67 SS. That said... If you are using full wheel covers then the steel wheel should be Black. Using base caps/poverty caps, then Body color with overspray on to the rear side which is still black. This would include the spare in trunk...

Good luck

Mike
