Has anyone ever heard of factory distributed Z28 race cars? I was talking with a guy that claims he has a 67 Z28 body he was going to restore. He said it was 1 of 200 factory made race cars! He said he talked to Floyd Garret about it and he verified it for him. He says they made around 890 Z28's in 1967. It's supposedly white with a red interior, had no undercoating, not heater, no radio from the factory. I told him I've never heard anything like this story and I was surprised Floyd told him this stuff. I'm trying to get the trim tag information, but has anyone ever heard anything like this?

-------I thought that the production numbers for 67 Z/28s was 601 or thereabouts. As for factory racers,Ive not heard of that in relation to Zs.I did see a 67 396/375 at a dealership in Washington Courthouse Ohio in the spring of 67(new) with headers and an extra pumpkin in the trunk. It was white/black,and although I might be wrong it was not an SS.Matter of fact it had no convenience or gingerbread options whatsoever........Bill S

Many of the early 67 Z/28s were made into race cars but more like 25 not 200. here is quote from Z/28 web site...
"The first 25 Z-28's were built between Dec. 29, 1966 and Jan. 12, 1967. These went strictly to favored dealers, mostly for reworking as all-out competition cars. Z-28 #1 was shipped to Aero Chevrolet in Alexandria, Va., where it was groomed as Johnny Moore's entry in the Daytona 24-hour Continental. Cars #2, #3, and #4 went to Yenko Chevrolet, Canonsburg, Pa., for driver Ben Poster, also for Daytona." read more at... http://www.67z28.com/history.htm |

I'm a little surprised Floyd Garret told him this story and the number of 890 Z28's made. Unless he has some serious inside information, I don't know where he came up with those numbers. The car is for sale over at the www.camaros.net site.
