Chevrolet SS wheel spare tire question
Picked this up at a swap meet last weekend. Does this look like an original 14" SS spare tire that has never been mounted? The Firestone tire is a DOT but I have never been able to figure out Firestone date codes or found something that could. Thanks for any insights.

You should be able to find the date code and 2 letter stamping to determine vehicle....here is a 70 SS wheel (AO code) built November 6, 1969.

SS Wheel...
The wheel seems to be in nice shape...letter code is either YA or AO...69-70.
Looks like the tire says F70 x 14...that would rule out Nova, and the Nova didn't offer white letter tires in that time frame anyway. Most likely from a Chevelle SS...or Camaro?? As for the tire...it looks real nice...but I'm no expert on the tire dates...post the info and the boys will sort it out.

That's 100% a modern day reproduction tire,look at the tread design.
Does the DOT start with CYLD? Hope you didn't pay too much for it.. The rim has recently been painted,like repro offers now,but could still be a 54 year old factory original,and not a modern day reproduction. Relay the numbers and letters surrounding the valve stem as JMB has shown to determine that. Last edited by Mr70; 02-25-2024 at 08:10 PM.

It looks original to me with the paint dot next to the weights and little sticker next to the production code. I see the DOT next to the paint dot. I'm not sure what year the DOT started but I seem to remember it starting earlier than I previously thought. 1968 or 1969? I'm certainly no tire expert but I would have bought it based on what I see. What is wrong with the tread pattern? Please educate me.

DOT started in mid / late 1967 for the 1968 Model Year.. Correct tires for a 1967 Corvette did not have DOT on them. My original Uniroyal Loredo "The Rain Tire" was a non DOT tire. Bill
