Day 2 is a term I see lots of people using loosely, especially with guys trying to sell old speed parts. I first heard of the term form Dave "whitetop" on this site. I did a quick search and found this early thread referencing Day 2 mods.
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbt...=2630#Post2630 I don't know if he coined the phrase, but I wouldn't mind confirming what others think/know where the term came from. I kinda feel the spirit of a "day 2" mod might be mods and parts put on a car during the timeline which was typical for a car loan on these cars. What would that be about 3 years? Seems like the mods done in the mid to late 1970's probably wouldn't be considered a day 2 mod anymore. Kinda starts falling into the street freak theme or just plain vintage speed parts. The door is open on where to draw the line on day 2 vs "period correct" but I am interested to see what others think. ![]() |

I agree, day 2 should be limited to a year or two after the car was sold. After all, the term implies the parts were added very soon after taking delivery.

Right away I had to put bigger rubber on our old Chevelle. Within the first year or so I had added 15" rallys and bigger rubber all around. The headers and Hurst shifter came along within the first couple of years as well. Buying the car generally emptied the bank accounts of us young guys and it took a while to save up enough for the add ons. Two years sounds reasonable for a day two car. Back in '68 I bought my Ram Air Firebird with about 6K miles on it. The original owner, a little older and flushed with money, had the new car done before it ever left the dealership. The engine was balanced and blueprinted with the Royal Pontiac Bobcat kit and headers added. The rear rims were widened to 8" and fat MTs were added all around along with traction bars. A Camaro spoiler was added and the rear face was painted black. I guess you couldn't get any closer to Day 2 than that. It was a fun car to say the least.

That Camaro would be like a Day 4 drag car with the gauges on the hood and the fat tires in the rear.

I might have to disagree about the Camaro. If all that stuff was put on the car in the first year of ownership, I would call it day 2. This is assuming all of the aftermarket stuff was new and not used- like a 3 year old tach or somthing. Day 2 can be mild or extreme but I think it's significance is that the items are correct to the date of the car, much like we value the matching date codes on the OE stuff.

Our SS396 car still has the Stewart-Warner tach and gauges along with the Hurst shifter that the original owner installed back in Day 2. The Cragars aren't period correct but will do. The restored gas station makes a nice back drop for pictures.

I like to think we (MCACN) were one of the first to acknowledge the Day 2 mods for shows.
For the MCACN show, we offer a specific categeory called "Day 2/Concours". This is judged in the same manner as a full-on Concours entry, with the exception being that period correct mods are considered in the judging process, IF they are date correct within 2 years of the original manufcature date of the vehicle, they pass the test. In most cases, aftermarket parts indeed can be date verified. This category differs from our "Street Stock/Modified" classes in that SS/Mod can have any mods, color changes, engine swaps etc, but they are judged for quality of the mods, fit and finish with no regard to the age of the parts. In other words, a 69 Camaro with Radial T/A's, a color change and chrome valve covers may do great in SS/Mod, but would get major point deductions in Day 2 Concours. Although we choose to use the 2-year rule, that is just our way of doing it and not a set rule for Day 2. We created this category to acknowledge and encourage (and credit) a higher level of cars that are properly modified and also for cars like Nickeys, early Yenkos etc that may have had engine swaps when new, that would be docked points under "standard" Concours judging practices. This is clearly our fastest growing category and is generating considerable interest. Bashton MCACN Managing Member |
