Default Camaro Power Steering...

Need some help from you Camaro experts...how do I know what type of power steering setup Karen has in her 69 SS car...seems to be very sensitive and too "easy", if you know what I mean. She would like to "firm" up the steering and have more feel..better handling. What do I look at...steering box part number, pitman arm size??....tell me where to start. She is also thinking about adding some horsepower to the stock 350...but that's a whole 'nuther thread

Wilma, What you have is pretty normal for those cars, stock. Power steering could be anywhere from 3.5 to 2.5 turns lock to lock, and stock boxes are very heavily assisted. If you have the 2.5 turn box, they are darned near twitchy.

Depending on how you feel about modifying the car, I can suggest one very popular fix.

Get a rebuilt steering box (from any autoparts store) for a late 80's Camaro "with special suspension." This is the box that was used in IROC Z's and WS6 Trans Am's. 2.5 turns, with a high effort and modern feel. You'll need adapters for the hose fittings and a different ragjoint, Lee Manufacturing has them.

Here's the details http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=103139
