On this day in 1964 at the New York Words fair Ford Motor Company introduced the Ford Mustang to the World. Lee Iacocca being the great marketer that he was committed to selling 417,000 Mustangs within the next 12 months and used the slogan 417 by 4-17,meaning by Apr 17 1965 he wanted to meet his goal. Ford produced a number of cars for promotion purposes many of them being convertibles. In order to get vehicles to the furthest markets in North America for the April Intro many of the promo cars were the first produced including serial number 100001 which ended up in Newfoundland. Although the car was the property of Ford and was on “tour” an eager salesman from George Parsons Ford in St. John’s sold the car to an excited pilot From Eastern Provincial Airways.
Two years later, Ford wanting car #1 for their museum tracked the car down and exchanged it for a brand new 66 Mustang. Be careful of those Newfie salesman, they will sell stuff they are not supposed to. Paul (born and raised in Newfounland)

I remember the big billboard signs advertising them. For some reason, 64 1/2 sticks out in my mind. Like the signs had that instead of 64.

What sticks out in my mind was the hole big enough to lose a sleeping bag through in the right front floor of my 65 Mustang. Owning three of those early 'stangs was a dark period of my life.

A set of studded Firestone T&C snow tires and an early Rustang w/ the heavy bondo 1/4 panel option was an amazing combination for winter traction!. ![]() ~ Pete
