Definitely a repro lid... a cheap one at that. Look where the wingnut goes... an original one is recessed much deeper...the edge/lip is different on a real one too. The base appears to be an original GM piece. Someone probably bought a cheap 15.00 air cleaner to replace the original pitted lid. Here's what a real GM lid looks like, the differences should be pretty obvious:

Thanks alot!!!
I tried to get a similar pic of mine.... but the edge really looks similar..but could you post a pic of the center depression..it does look deeper on yours...but this does feel like really heavy guage...I bought a repo lid for my real 70 Z air cleaner and its a bit thinner metal than this one...(I did keep the pitted original lid though..but just by luck...I just kept everything...never really thought about original back then...) Thanks again!! |

Is there any writing on the bottom of the chrome lid? A silkscreen?

The originals had a "double bead" on the edge... hard to get it to show in pics, but maybe this one will show. I'm 110% certain that lid you have is not an original GM lid. As for silk screened AC instructions, these were found on most production line air cleaners, but many if not all over the counter GM versions lacked anything on the underside of the lid. I'm sure yours has nothing on the backside.
