| Trim Tag- how to clean it

What is the best way to clean a trim tag? I have one that is very thick with paint - not sure what type of paint but i suspect its some type of harden enamel that was sprayed on the fire wall.

Ed, Good ol lacquer thinner will do the job if you're in no hurry. Otherwise some low odor paint stripper will do the trick, brush it on the tag and watch the paint lift off the tag. The low odor stuff is fairly mild just remember to nuetralize it by washing the tag off with water when you're done. Chris |

Were the trim tags not attached to the firewall BEFORE it was painted..therefore should not be bare metal. |

ok thanks chris - i have seen some restored cars with the trim tag painted and others not painted. I assume painted black is the correct way?

Painted tag is correct, but doesnt hurt to remove the existing paint if it is thick enough to the point where it is difficult to read. After you clean all the old paint off, paint it black again.

It all depended on what the factory workers did. Some factories put a piece of tape over the tag before doing any painting, and others sprayed firewall black around the tag leaving the tag body color. And other factories of course sprayed over the whole tag when doing the firewall. I think it depended mainly on the factory, but also on the specific painter. Steve
