"CE" BLOCKS ---- Understanding this code

OK, wanted to have a final place to go to on this CE stamped Block issue.

Would like to have this post as a guide to CE useage, where it pertains to restored GM cars, specifically Camaros, Chevelles, Novas, Trucks, etc.

What is a CE stamp?
When did it begin?
How is it used?
Is their any GM documentation regarding the CE useage?
When was the last year a CE designation was stamped for distribution?
What blocks have been seen and used by GM with the CE stamping?
What is the correct warranty procedure used by GM to apply any CE stamped block/engine into our GM cars?

Anything else this should include that I am missing?

CE stamping began with the #321 block as far as 427s go , the #323 was the first 396 block with a CE designation. They were both produced at about the same time and are 68 casting #s. Prior to that the warranty motors had a blank pad.

Wasn't there some 'X' code stampings on warranty and counter exchange blocks previous to the CE's?.

Here's a new development that those with CE blocks might want to check out. It seems that an assembly code was stamped on the blocks when applicable. You need to remove the starter to view it as its on the flat surface of the flange. It seems to consist of the month and year only excluding the day. I've found them on both Tonawanda and Flint blocks.

My 512 CE block has T089 on the flange. It also has a "4" about 2" from the T089. Any clue if that is significant?
